If you grab a camera and go out and shoot from the hip you might bring in some great film. And maybe not.
The more you learn about the movie business the better. If you're a writer, chat with a set designer and wardrobe, see how they work together and what they are trying to bring to the film; watch a director on set; sit down with an editor, see how in cutting film you can add subtleties to the actors' performance, make a slow scene fast, a fast scene melancholic. A good editor will study the script before he even starts the edit.
Film is a collaborative process. Bob Dylan said: You've got to know your song well before you start singing, and there's no better advice. Get some knowledge before you join the choir.
